Aphex Twin : Selected Ambient Works II Remix album... sort of

Here's a great feature on what happens if you accidentally let a copy of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works II album go a bit mouldy. Organic remix a go-go. I think this could be the start of whole new genre of organic glitch. Read the article from FACT magazine on the link below, or listen to the soundcloud clips directly below:- FACT magazine article

New Track of the week : Grizzy Bear - Ute

It's hard not to be excited by the prospect of a new Grizzly Bear album. Here's the first taster from it (it tastes nearly as good as Twiglets too)...

Game of Thrones theme tune played on "squeaky toys"

Another post in a long line of "theme tunes played on weird instruments", for this week, we have the Game of Thrones theme tune played on squeaky dogs toys. I can't believe it's taken so long for someone to do this... Enjoy!

Alt J - Breezeblocks

Alt J have released (a slightly fettled Version of) Breezeblocks as their next single. The demo for this has been around for ages but its sounding as strong as ever. I sense this year (and especially the festival months) are going to be a big one for this band. Enjoy:-

Bleep (Warp Records) Filtered Compilation

A great compilation of unsigned artists is out now on Bleep. You can stream the whole thing here. Some of the best stuff I've heard of late, signed or otherwise:-

FREE Towards Green Mixtape

We're absolutely loving this 30 minute Towards Green mixtape over at Occasional Towers. It strangely reminds us of our own Car Alarm Quartet's Experimental Error #1 in the way it ebbs and flows... have a listen (via The Guardian):-

Old Peel Fave Of The Day : Space DJz - Descending Life

First heard on John Peel in 1999 and then many more times on a slightly chewed up C90(type II). Now reheard on YouTube. Technology eh ?

Track of the day (preview) : Last Japan - Ambush

Loving this one - out on the 16th April. Put it in your diary.

Why ? Well I'll tell you...(track of the day thing)

Here be today's track of the day. Why ? Well because I liked it... no I mean the track is called "Why ?". Yes, I'm really that funny - BELIEVE. Tis by a band called The Sweeney (not a cast recording thankfully) and was something of a Peel favourite from '96 (though I know it from 2012 eathlings). Enjoy:-

Lego News Roundup (including crab Lego news)

Lego + Shaun of the Dead = Genius. I think we've all known that for some time. Finally someone has gone to great lengths to prove it. See below:-

Or read a Guardian article about it:-

...and while we're talking about the Guardian covering Lego based news events, here's the crab section of today's Lego news roundup:-

That is all.

Now that's how you release a record...

Third Man Records once again find a great way to release a record - via the medium of a balloon - though sadly I fear it was an April Fools day stunt. How do we make this actually happen ? Read more at the NME:-

Track of the day

Nice remix of Philip Glass (koyaanisqatsi) by Oneohetrix Point Never. Chilled stuff for a (hopefully) sunny weekend.

(Super) Microfarad Melody Eel Back on Empire Podcast

The Microfarad Melody Eel has once again surfaced for air on the Empire Podcast, though by the sounds of the jingle(ry) produced, perhaps he should have stayed underwater a bit longer.... Enjoy ?

Turns out space is pretty 'big'...

and then see for yourself:-

Probably room for Earth to have that conservatory we always fancied. Actually, scrub that - we're heating up too much as it is....

30 Worst album covers of all time / Anyone got a copy of the best of Wayne Newton ?

Twas a 'classic' viral email from a few years back, but it's returned, this time on a so called 'web site' with some fairly remarkable additions.

"Thankyou Jack White, for the 3RPM record you gave us"

Currently riding high on the 'cool idea' list - the 3RPM record to celebrate the third birthday of Thirdman Records (Jack White's label). Turn out it's pretty hard to play though:-

More info straight from the White's mouth here:-

Chemical Brothers Live Album "Don't Think"

I'm loving this stream of the Chemical Brothers new live album and I'm told the film is even better (the DVD has been ordered). Via the Guardian:-

Please Pick Up Your Litter

I'm genuinely quite excited by this. I should also point out that I don't get out much.

New Sigur Ros "‘Ekki Múkk’"

Here's a (possibly meltwater stream) of the new Sigur Ros single, taken from their forthcoming album "Valtari". #Excitied #IWantToGoBackToIceland.

Another good one for the back garden on a sunny day (best get a move on - the UK is back to clouds by the weekend). Enjoy !

Track of the day: St Peters by Champs

Loving this track, which I first caught on the ever wonderful Rob Da Bank weekly (should be daily) show. I'm not sure if or when this will be out as a single or album (this youtube clip is a radio rip I think). Enjoy in the sunshine:-

Friday, 23 March 2012

Happy Friday

...and if this doesn't make your Friday happy, I don't know what will.

Bangers of the week

And for the inevitable cold that quickly follows:-

Microfarad Melody Eel on the Empire Film Podcast

Close aquatic Friend of Occasional records, the Microfarad Melody Eel, appears on the latest ever excellent Empire Podcast in jingle(y) form. See (though probably better to hear) below:-

Chris's quote "I'm losing the will to live" kind of says it all ! More eel strangeness is available on Soundcloud and Myspace.

Happy Friday.

Track of the week type thing

This week's track of the week is "Buchla Harmonica" by ethanhein. Processed vocal and harmonica with added electronic percussion. Lovely bubbling analogue goodness:-

Via the ever wonderful Disquiet

New single from Hot Chip - 'Flutes'

I'm absolutely loving this - can't wait for the album:-

Jurassic Fenton

What can I say, other than Fenton... Fenton..... FENTON !

Max Bygraves & the Grimethorpe Colliery Band - 'Do It The Safety Way'

I think we can all learn something from this, not least what NOT to do when writing lyrics. And music. In fact pretty much avoid everything this record demonstrates and you'll be OK. That said, I'm blogging about so who's the real winner.

And to think that I thought "Health and safety" was only a pain these days...

Comedy Tuesday

I trust these two beauties will brighten your Tuesday. First up an 8bit chiptune re-working of This Charming Man, from the wonderfully named "Super Morrissey Bros":-

I don't remember playing that level, but I bet it was based around cycling through Salford (health bonuses will be required). If that's whetted your appetite for This Charming Man covers/reworkings, you could do worse than give Maggie8s somewhat more serious "This Charming Lady" cover/reworking a go:-

Finally, something truly remarkable. The future of music ? Possibly (but lets hope not):-

See you on the other side.

Some err more tracks of the week. Ambienteer 'n' Thomas Raukamp

Some relaxed (and yet terrifying in some cases) numbers for the weekend. First up, some lovely ambient piano action from Thomas Raukamp. Beautiful stuff and not dissimilar to our own Car Alarm Quartet. Flippin enjoy:-

Nice, no ? Well now let's ruin that mood with some terror, supplied by err electric supermarket doors (N.B. not "The Doors"). Enjoy and don't have nightmares.

Both found on the ever superb Disquiet.

Please help save the poor cooling towers...

This is a great viral advert that's been doing the rounds (err last month). Alas, I think Ecotricity may have failed in their attempt to make customers want to switch to a greener energy provider - I find myself strangely concerned for the fate of the cooling towers. I trust none were hurt in the making of this....

Sean McCann & Matthew Sullivan - "Vanity Fair"

Very pleasant after a long day in the saddle:-

Jon Gomm covered on err Gameboy

For those of you familiar with Jon Gomm this may not make much sense. For those of you familiar with him, it probably won't make much sense either, but anyway here we go:-

Robot Quadrotors Perform James Bond Theme

Basically the title says it all, but for those that can't visualise this see below. Basically, one day all gigs will be like this:-

Dogs Underwater

Not only a great outcome from a 'Peel-like bandname generator', but also the subject of some great pics. Jump in the pool, here:-

Track of the week : Alt J Fitzpleasure

Can't stop listening to this new one from Alt-J. I suspect this could be a big year for them (it's a leap year after all - that's one extra day already)...

You can download some other (equally ace-icles) gubbins over yonder:-
